Difference between Hair and Follicle/Graft


People often get confused when they do research about places for hair transplant in Indore that why some clinics do charge in hair follicles and some in hair grafts. Both are different terminology in the field of hair transplant and kept under most specific consideration while quoting the price of hair transplant.
So, what is the difference between hair, grafts and follicles?

Hair-

Hair is made of a protein called keratin, which is also the main component of your fingernails. This protein is produced by follicles, bulb-shaped structures within your skin.

Follicles-

A hair follicle is part of the skin that grows hair by packing old cells together. A follicle or follicle unit can contain 1-3 hair (depends on the thickness of hair).

Graft-

Grafts means a bunches of hair follicles obtained by the surgical procedure by dissection of the strip from the donor area.

Each tissue is considered as graft and can have 1, 2, or 3 follicles units. So a follicular unit is technically a graft.

All follicular units are graft but the reverse is necessarily true.

How in different procedures these terms are used-

FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation)

In FUT procedure, first, a strip/tissue is removed from the hairy part of the scalp (Called donor part that is hair fall resistant). Small circled grafts are formed from the tissue, these grafts can contain multiple hair units, and kept carefully from the team of technicians. Then, recipient part ( hairless) part is prepared and these small grafts are placed into the scalp, attentively.

FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction)

In FUE method, surgeons first remove the hair follicles units one by one, each unit can contain 1-3 hairs, and transplanted in the same way to the hairless part of the scalp. As these follicles are hair fall resistant in few months they start producing new hairs from the root.

Why Do Surgeons Deal Differently?

There are surgeons who deal in hair grafts and some in hair follicles. The reason is not actually specific. It can be just their choice that how conveniently they can introduce procedures to the patient. Now, most of the clinics give quotation based on hair follicles, 'hair grafts' is less used.

So, How Patient Understand Where to Go?

It is okay, if you are confused, at one clinic you are quoted with grafts and on another one in follicles. In both terms what is needed, numbers of hairs on the scalp.
